According to Qualified Remodeler magazine, an astounding “seven in 10 residential remodelers” did not make it in business for five years. What does that mean to you? Choose your remodeler wisely. 

If a remodeler is struggling, you may find yourself paying the price for his failed business practices with no way to recoup your money other than the courthouse steps.

Some remodelers can put on a good front. What you see is not always what you get. There are signs to look for in order to minimize the likelihood of losing hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars, to an unscrupulous or desperate contractor:

• Check the company’s rating with the Better Business Bureau in your area.
• Contact references and/or read Google or Facebook reviews.
• Ask local remodeling stores and home improvement vendors for recommendations.
• Find out how long a company has been in business. Start-up remodelers are a risky choice.
• Never give up-front money to a contractor, especially cash. A successful, established contractor will have the capital and credit to supply and begin your project.
• Get an estimate in writing and discuss the payment process before the job starts.
• Price reflects quality and commitment. If the price is too low, be suspicious. This contractor is either clueless, plans to cut corners, or will cash your check and run.
• Can the contractor commit to your job from start to finish, or will he have to come and go?
• Never hire your neighbor, friend, or relative. This typically turns into a nightmare and everyone loses. If your project is a part-time gig, you’ll likely get poor results and over a much longer timeframe than if you hired a reputable, established contractor.

There are also less subtle clues:

• Do they answer the phone professionally?
• Do they answer your questions directly or seem unsure of themselves?
• Can they provide you with a quote and reasoning for the pricing they give?
• Are the knowledgeable about the permit process?
• Are they licensed?
• Do they know the names of local building inspectors?
• Do they appear professional and ready to work?
